Sony stops production of the PS2 ... To prepare the PlayStation 4

After more than twelve years of loyal service, Sony just unplug PlayStation 2. The second generation home console of the Japanese giant will no longer be produced for the Japanese territory and stores, which will no longer be provided.

Released in Japan in March 2000, the PlayStation 2 has arrived in Europe in late 2000. It has, over the long term, a phenomenal success. Initially attractive mainly because it featured a DVD fairly inexpensive in relation to the market, it has, over months and years, seeing his flesh catalog (approximately 11,000 songs would be released on this platform ), met with a success that the PlayStation 3 has eclipsed three years. A total of 150 million units have been passed by Sony, ahead of the Wii yet very popular and almost 100 million units sold.

Obviously, this the beginning of killing, that sounds like the end of an era, is an opportunity for many to turn, perhaps a little rushed towards the future. Hence the recurring rumors of a PlayStation 4, which is necessarily in development at Sony, resume vigor. Some even see in the closure of production lines PlayStation 2 reason to hope that these factories will jump from 2 to 4 and out the fourth generation of consoles. Unlikely in the short term, if a PS4 might actually be announced at E3 2013, we rely on rumors, which have been wrong so far, marketing should she, not occur before 2014, if willing to believe the analysts.
However, Sony has not indicated whether he intended to stop the moment the production and marketing of the PlayStation 2 in North America and Europe. This decision may be taken in the next few months, to match the shift with the introduction of the console.
